Objectives:
- Take photos of faces in objects
- Edit to make the face more apparent
Research:
I really like these photos of faces in everyday objects because the people found them looking this way they didn't edit them in anyway to make them look more like a face. Also as I mentioned before these objects are things you see everyday but most people don't think to look at them more closely to reveal a face. I think taking pictures of everyday objects with faces make people slow down and look more carefully at these objects which allows them to be more aware of the things around them.
My Photos:
I took some of these photos at my house and others at the school. I found out that a technique that was really useful in capturing faces in objects was first finding two things that looked like eyes and then trying to find a nose or mouth from that point.
4 Edited Photos:
In order to make the faces more apparent in these photos I used the magnetic lasso tool to separate the face from the rest of this photo, this allowed me to only edit that part of the photo to make the face more obvious to viewers. After I was done editing inside my lassoed area I would super feather the face so that it still would blend into the background.

5 Step Critique:
- Observe
- Describe- This photograph is a “8.5 x 11” digital print on metallic paper of a mower handle that resembles a face. The photo is horizontal and taken up close, but doesn’t have much texture. The screws or eyes in this case have a chrome finish making the eyes look like they have rainbows in them. The mouth of the face is simply just a rectangle cut out of the face, making it look like this face has a happy expression. The structure of the face is a mower handle that has a glossy black paint on it, this gives the face a sheen due to the natural light present in this photo.
- Analyze- An element of art this photo represents is color which creates the principle of design emphasis. The unique rainbow colored chrome is what catches the eye of the viewer first meaning it creates the most emphasis. The chrome coloring is very eye catching because it is placed on a black surface with a white background. Another element of art this photo shows is shape which creates balance. The two perfectly circular eyes are perfectly placed so they are the same distance apart creating a sense of balance. The rectangular cut out that is the mouth in this photo is also precisely placed in between the two eyes, which adds to that sense of balance throughout the photo.
- Interpret- My interpretation of this photo is it’s trying to give the viewer a joyful feeling because of the big smile that is present on the objects “face”. Also the light that is reflecting off of the “eyes” of the object also give a sense of joy or happiness because when people smile some say their eyes sparkle, which is shown in this piece as well. Although the photo consists of mostly blacks and white there is color present in the “eyes” which could also give the photo a more cheerful feeling for a viewer. Another interpretation this photo could have is the mower which the face belongs to has been sitting in the same spot for many years because it is retired. The smile can be seen when somebody walks by so they will stop and give the mower some company for even a few seconds.
- Evaluate- This photo is successful because it really emphasizes a face, which is important especially considering this is one of the objectives. The close up shot allowed for a very obvious view of the face the viewer didn’t have to search for the face. Although trying to spot the hidden face in the photo can be fun I felt the artist made a good decision by making the apparent face. One thing the artist could have done better is to try to capture a more crystal clear photo. I think this would have added another depth to the photo because of its close detailed nature. If the photo was clearer than viewers could maybe see more color and texture in the photo that isn’t currently there.
