Objectives:
- I will take photos of fish that can easily be resized and edited
- I will edit these photos using surrealism techniques to add the fish into everyday situations.
Research:
I will take photos of fish and then add them into normal photos. I think this will make the photo seem more surrealistic, which is something I haven't done in my photography. This assignment will help me step out of my comfort zone and create something that I haven't done before.
My Photos:
I took these photos at the pet store so I could capture many different types of fish. I took the other photos that I used as my backgrounds in my backyard because I wanted the fish to blend in to the real world.
Edited Photos
I edited these photos by using the lasso tool to cut the fish out of its photo and then proceeding to use the move tool to place it in another picture. I would then use opacity to help it blend into the background more naturally because the feather wasn't giving that realistic look that I wanted.

5 Step Critique:
Observe:
Describe: This is an “8.5 x 11” digital print on lustre paper. The subject of this photo is a boy blowing a bubble using gum. Inside the gum there is a fish, this makes the gum act as a fishbowl structure in this case. The top third of the photo is occupied by the boys eyes and the background of the photo. The bottom two- thirds of the photo is occupied by the bubble gum and the lips of the boy. The artist edited this photo using the lasso tool to cut out the fish and then using the move tool to move it into the bubble gum. The artist made the fish look more realistic in the bubble gum by making the fish slightly opaque.
Analyze: An element of art that is represented in this photo is color which creates the principle of design, emphasis. The bright pink bubble gum is clearly emphasized in this piece because it’s bright color really pops amongst the rest of the photo. I also feel that having the emphasis on the bubble gum also emphasizes the fish inside of it because they are very interconnected in this photo. Another element of art that is represented in this photo is texture this creates the principle of design of balance in this photo. The smooth texture of the persons face and the bubble gum versus the bumpy texture of the background create balance. Balance is created because the two differing textures balance each other out. There is just the right amount of both textures, this helps to ensure one texture isn’t overruling the other. I think balance in texture is important in the photo because without it the subject of the photo could be lost in an overruling texture.
Interpret: I feel the mood of this photo is serene or calm. Fish are usually calm animals because all they do is swim around their tank letting their fins float aimlessly behind them. I feel that when blowing a bubble using bubble gum everything is calm until the bubble pops, but in this case the bubble hasn’t popped yet. Another element of this photo that makes it serene is the person’s eyes are closed which suggest they are relaxed. I think that this photo represents how nature is trapped in the human world because the fish is inside of a man made object. Many organisms habitats have been taken over by humans causing animals to have to live amongst man made things. I think fish are a great example of this concept because they literally are trapped in man made objects or fishbowls/tanks.
Evaluate: I feel this artist was successful in portraying a realistic photo despite the fact they had to combine two different photos. The fish looks as though it was in the gum when the person blew it up. When artists achieve this look it shows that they really took time and effort to ensure that it looked as realistic as possible. Something this artist could have improved upon was getting a better angle of the boy who is blowing the gum. I feel it would have been more successful if the artist focused on getting more of the boys face and neck in the photo so it wouldn’t distract from the subject of the photo. They could have done this by not cropping the photo at much and also just taking a farther shot. I think having the boys face taking up half the photo really distracts viewers from the subject itself.
