Objectives:
- I will take photo of the snowy mountains with a sunset behind them.
- I will edit these photos so the sunset is really apparent. I will crop the photo so it looks like a panoramic shot.
Research:
I am think I can take picture of the mountains somewhere up high like Purgatory or Red Mountain Pass. I will try to catch the sunset when it is very vibrant and colorful.
My Photos:
I took these photos at Fort Lewis during sun down so I could try and capture pictures of the sunset. There wasn't a really vibrant sunset, but there was still hints of color in the sky.
Edited Photos:
I edited these using image adjustments such as brightness, vibrance, exposure, etc. to make the color in the sky more apparent. Although some of these photos don't have a large amount of color in the sky I think these simple image adjustments really brought them out.
Printed/MAtted Photo:
5 Step Critique:
Observe:
Describe: This is a digital print on lustre paper of mountains. The photo is a long horizontal landscape shot of the mountains right at sunset. The top third is the blue sky and the tops of the snowy mountains. The bottom two thirds are the snowy mountains and the rolling hills that lie below them. The artist edited this photo using image adjustments such as exposure and vibrance to make this piece more bright and eye catching to viewers.
Analyze: An element of art represented in this photo is line this creates the principle of design movement. The line in this photo is seen in the horizon line of the mountains where they meet the sky. The viewer's eyes move along the horizon line this is where the principle of design movement can be observed. Another element of art that is represented in this piece is texture which creates the principle of design variety. The smooth texture of the snow lying on the mountains and the rough texture of the trees creates variety in this piece. The textures seen on the mountains and the hills creates variety because there are multiple different textures seen throughout this photo.
Interpret: The mood of this piece is very serene and peaceful. I think this is the mood of this piece because of the simplicity of the piece. Also when snow is falling it is very quiet and I feel that is why this piece gives me a peaceful and calm feeling when looking at it. I think the purpose of this photo is to show that the winter is not always cold and sad. The warm tones cast upon the mountains give the viewer a warm and happy feeling which changes the stereotypes surrounding winter. I think this happy feeling is projected in this piece because of the warmth people feel in their hearts because of the holidays that take place in the cold of winter.
Evaluate: Something this artist did well in this piece is capturing a clear photo of the mountains that is very simplistic. This helps the viewer to only focus on the subject of this piece, the mountains, because there are no other distractions in the photo. The artist could have improved on the neatness of their matting. The crooked edges that fail to be crisp distract the viewer from the photo itself because of their messiness. This ultimately takes away from the clean nature of the photo.
