Objectives:
- I will take photos of dogs and children playing in the snow.
- I will edit these photos in black and white to make the photos seem more sentimental.
Research:
I like these photos because the snow in the air gives the photo a very playful look. I also like how the photo of the people in black and white because the snow stand out.
My 20 Photos:
I took these photos of my little brother and or grandparents dog in their backyard. This was right after a huge storm so the snow was fluffy and very deep, perfect for photos!
My Edited Photos:
I edited these photos in black and white because I like the look of the snow better when the subjects are not in color. I also used other image adjustments such as exposure, brightness/contrast, shadows/highlights, etc. to refine these photos.
Printed/Matted Photo:
5 Step Critique:
Observe:
Describe: This is a “5 x 7” digital print on lustre paper of a boy in the snow. The top third of the photo is occupied by snow and a dogs tail. The last two-thirds of the photo is occupied by the boy and the dogs foot/paw. The artist edited this photo in black and white. They also brightened the photo to make the snow more white and obvious.
Analyze: An element of art represented in this photo is value which creates the principle of design variety. There are many different values throughout the photo such as the light value of the snow, the dark value of the boy’s coat, and the medium value of the dogs tail. All of these values are different which results in variety in the photo. Another element of art represented in this photo is texture, this creates the principle of design emphasis. The soft texture of the dogs tail immediately draws the viewer's eyes to the dogs tail. This creates emphasis because it is one of the only detailed textures seen in this photo.
Interpret: I feel the mood of this photo is joyful because of the big smile spread across the boys face. He looks very relaxed laying in the snow. The black and white of the photo also gives a relaxed look because there aren’t a bunch of colors strewn across the photo. I think that when people are relaxed most of the time they are also joyful or happy. I think this photo represents the bond between a boy and his dog. Although the full dog is not shown in this photo the boy is covered in snow which suggests that they could have been playing together. I also feel that the artist would have cropped out the do if it had no meaning to the boy or the meaning of the photo.
Evaluate: I think that something that was successful in this piece was the clarity of the photo. The detailed texture of the snow and the dogs tail helped to emphasize the clarity of the photo. I think that sometimes detail and texture can be lost when the photo is edited to be black and white. But this artist did a good job preserving the clarity, detail, and texture in this photo. Something that this artist could have improved upon was cutting their mat board more precisely. There is a little section the bottom that looks messy because the artist wasn’t as precise as they should have been when cutting their mat board. Although this is a little mistake I still feel it distracts the viewers eyes from the photo itself.
