Objectives:
-I will take photos of woman/girls wearing vintage looking clothing
-I will edit these photos to make them look like they were taken during the time the clothes were worn, I will also add text from old clothing advertisements to give an even more vintage feel.

Research:
I will use black and white editing with some sound added to give an older photo look and then add words from advertisements in this case, " make the clothes that make the woman". I think that by adding words from these ads it will add a deeper more powerful meaning to my photos about stereotypes during this time.
20 Photos:
I took these photos at my friends house and at Riverview elementary school. I tried to shoot in places that didn't look to modern, but I didn't really have to worry about colors clashing because I knew I wanted to edit them to be black and white.
Edited Photos:
I edited these photos to make them look more vintage by making them black and white and also adding noise. I also added quotes from old clothing ads about woman to add more meaning to my photos.

5 Step Critique:
Observe
Describe: This is an “8.5 x 11” digital print on lustre paper. There is a girl standing in front of an old looking van on the left of the photo. She is wearing a plaid skirt, sweater, bucket hat, and sunglasses. In the top right corner there are words that state, “You’d know her anywhere”. The photo is edited to look vintage, the artist did this by adding a black and white filter. The artist also added noise to this photo to make it look like it was taken with an old camera that lacked the technology we have today.
Analyze: An element of art that is represented in this photo is form which creates the principle of design, proportion. Form creates proportion in this photo because the vintage looking cars, which are 3D, create a scale for how large or small the girl standing in front of them is. This helps the viewer to understand if the artist used any sort of editing to change the size of the girl to possibly give the photo a more surrealistic feel. Another element of art that is represented in this photo is value, this creates the principle of design, balance. The different values of grey and black create balance because they are all dispersed evenly throughout the photo. The equal amounts of different shades balances out the photo, so that one shade doesn’t over rule the entire photo.
Interpret: My interpretation of this photo is it is trying to recreate the breakthrough of when women began to gain more power and respect. I think this because the saying the artist used, “You’d know her anywhere”, shows how women weren’t being “advertised” as housewives or good mothers, they were being presented as strong independent people who could function alone in society. The older looking photo suggests that this artist was trying to recreate a time when women didn’t have as many freedoms. The first way they began to gain more freedom was in fashion, such as wearing pants instead of a dress or skirt. Another interpretation I have of this photo is this woman was one of the first to really break stereotypes about what women should be wearing during this time. Although she is wearing a skirt in this photo it is shorter than they were probably permitted to wear during this time. The saying used, “You’d know her anywhere”, suggests that she is a large figure during this time because people obviously know her for doing something good for society, especially women.
Evaluate: I think this photo is successful because the artist does a good job capturing an old looking photo. The use of black and white editing and the addition of noise really helps add to the older feeling of this photo. The artist was also very clever when choosing the background because it consist of vintage looking cars which almost convince the viewer this photo was taken way back when. I think something this artist could have improved on is eliminating harsh shadows in the picture. The shadow of the van detracts from the light feeling of the photo. Another thing this photographer could have improved upon was focusing on not tilting the camera when taking a photo. The tilted photo takes away from the balance of the overall photo.
