Objectives:
- I will take photos of murals around Durango.
- I will edit these photos by layering different murals to create a new mural/pattern.
Research:
I will find murals around Durango to photograph. Although everyone has probably seen the murals I am going to photograph my editing will give the viewer a new perspective on these everyday murals.
My 20 Photos:
I drove around town and took pictures of murals on side walls and dumpsters around town. I have some that are landscapes and others are simply just patterns.
Edited Photos:
I edited these by using a layering technique. I would take one mural and layer it with another to make the mural more interesting to look at. I even did five layers on one of photos to see what would happen.
Printed/Matted Photo:
5 Step Critique:
Observe:
Describe: This is a “4 x 6” digital print on lustre paper. The subject of this photo is waves and a sun with the shadow of a mountain range in the background. The top third of the photo is occupied by the mountains and the tips of both the sun and ocean. The bottom two thirds are the bottom portion of the mountains, waves, and sun. The artist edited this photo by layering different photos on top of each other to achieve that shadowy mountain look in the background. The artist probably also brightened the color of the waves and sun to make them pop.
Analyze: An element of art that is represented in this photo is line, this creates the principle of design movement. Line is seen in this photo in many places such as the sun's rays, the underside of the waves, and the horizon line of the mountains. All of the lines in the photo help the viewers eyes to move about the photo. The viewers eyes first move through the waves which then leads into the horizon line. The horizon line ends at the suns rays where the viewers eyes follow them back to the waves. Another element of art that is represented in this photo is color which creates the principle of design balance. On the left side of the photo, the sun is a warm orange, while on the right side of the photo the ocean waves are a cold blue. The two opposing colors balance each other out because they are different, but each only takes up half of the photo. The mountains in the back also add to the balance of the photo because they are a neutral color that outlines the entire background.
Interpret: I think the mood of this photo is happy and playful because of the bright colors and the subject matter. The bright blues, yellows, and oranges all create a happy and playful mood because they are so vibrant. The subject matter is also very happy and playful because the sun, ocean, and mountains each bring many people joy. I think the purpose of this photo was to describe a place that has both oceans and mountains such as California. The mountains are in the background because many people only think of California as a beach, but really they have many mountains too.
Evaluate: The artist was successful in this piece in layering the photos in a way that made them look like a single photo. They used the perfect amount of opacity in their layers to create this single photo look which can be very difficult to accomplish. The artist could improve how they actually put the mountains in the photo. If they would have put them across the whole photo it would have added to the sense of balance even more. This missing piece makes it feel as though there is a missing piece of the photo.
