Objectives:
- I will take photos of the town of Durango at night using a slow shutter speed to capture cars moving.
- I will edit these photos so the lights in the town are very apparent to the viewer.
Research:
I want to get a perspective of most of the town of Durango, I will do this by going to a high point like the college or hogs back to get this perspective. I want to use a slow shutter speed so I can capture the movement of cars, as depicted in the left image below.
My photos
I took these photos on the rim of the college. I traveled around different points on the rim to get different perspectives of the town of Durango at night. I found that when I used longer shutter speeds the camera captured more details such as the stars and the mountains.
Edited PHotos
I didn't do much editing to these photos because I felt they didn't need very much. I used highlights in the image adjustments to really define the lights present in the city. I used brightness to make the sky a little brighter so more things were visible in my photo.

5 Step Critique
Observe
Describe: This is a “5 x 7” digital print on lustre paper of the City of Durango at night. The top third of the photo is occupied by the night sky and the tops of the mountains surrounding Durango. The bottom two thirds are occupied by the base of mountains and the city itself. The artist edited this photo to brighten the lights coming from the city to make them more apparent in the photo.
Analyze: An element of art that is represented in this photo is space, this creates the principle of design emphasis. The dark colored mountains against the bright town make for negative space in the mountains. This creates emphasis on the town because when placed against the negative dspace created by the mountains, the town is very obvious and eye catching. Another element of art that is represented in this photo is color, this creates the principle of design variety. There are a variety of different colors of lights apparent in this photo, some of these include red, yellow, orange, and green. The variety of colors helps the viewer to see more detail in the photo because if all of the lights were the same color they would blend together making it hard to differentiate what is what.
Interpret: My interpretation of this photo is it’s really emphasizing what really goes on in a small town at night. Most photographers tend to take more photos of cities at night because of everything that is still going on. But this photographer is showing viewers that small towns don’t just shut down at night either there is still lots of things going on. Another interpretation of this photo that I have is the artist is trying to show people how close to nature we really live. As seen in this photo the town is practically built in between and around mountains. I think taking this photo at night really shows viewers this idea because you only see the center of the town and nt anything on the mountain which gives the mountains an untouched feeling.
Evaluate: I think this photo is successful because the artist did a good job capturing a very unique photo of the city of Durango that most people don’t see. The artists choice in location was a very wise choice. I think it is such a unique shot because of how the city goes around the mountains. One thing this artist could have improved upon was using a longer shutter speed. This would help to capture even more detail and also more action going on in the city.
